Meet the Avian Flu H5N1, it's a Killer
January 6th 2008 21:58
H5N1 an innocuous little set of symbols that masks a sinister killer far more deadly than any active terrorist group in the world today.
Is this the long touted pandemic blight that will effectively and efficiently eradicate a large mass of people from the planet. Giving many conspiracy theorists confirmation for their fears.
What prompted this post? It's my albatross, nemesis and the millstone the prevents my entry into sleep-land, the C2Cam Show. My wife and I were living in SE Asia when news began circulating about the spread of the disease known as avian flu. So, we've seen the after effects of this blight.
It kills in a horrific manner, your lungs seem to dissolve and you're gone, quickly, 6 out of 10 times. I'd rather face bullets in combat, the odds are better. Here is a synopsis of the show:
Who is this Dr. Ridenour:
"So what?" you say. Here are two little assertions:
- Globally, between 500,000 and one million people die each year from influenza.
- But a pandemic of the human form of bird flu, which experts believe is inevitable, could kill as many as 50m people worldwide.
That is scary. Anecdotal wisdom suggests that those with the best immune system have the best chances of recovering from most flu's. Paraphrasing Dr. Ridenour, he suggested that it would work against those in the 12 to 40 group, those who usually have the strongest immune system. It appears that the virus affect the lungs and triggers the body's immune system to go into high gear, and the end result is that it prompts the body's immune system to destroy the lung tissue. Crap I wish I'd been more alert to that part of the message (I was half asleep until I heard that remark).
It seems now that being civilized will work against mankind; this flu doesn't give a rip about any of those things we are so preoccupied with now, ethnicity, wealth, religion, politics, self, self and self.

- What to do?
-Where is it now in the world? and W.H.O. is monitoring its progress?
-Is there any cure all?
Part of the reason that I live in Alaska, I can live a subsistence lifestyle off grid utilizing the sea and land resources without worrying about a flood of immigrants from the lower 48. And those that made it would freeze during their first winter or get eaten by a very un-finicky bear.
Well, sleep well tonight and never mind the bird droppings everywhere. It's probably nothing.

Avian Flu Pandemic
Art Bell spoke with practicing internist Dr. Gary Ridenour about why he believes that avian flu represents the greatest health threat to mankind in the history of the world.
The current strain of avian flu kills about 60% of the people who contract it in as little as eight hours, Ridenour said. In order for it to become a pandemic, he explained, the virus must mutate down to a less lethal but far more infectious form that can be spread from one person to another. Ridenour estimates a one in three chance of an avian flu pandemic in the near future.
Though seemingly counterintuitive, Ridenour said the death rate will be highest among 20 to 40 year olds because they have the best immune systems. This is because the avian flu harnesses the immune system to attack and dissolve the tissue in the lungs. According to health experts, this "cytokine storm" is one of the main reasons so many young and healthy people died during the 1918 flu pandemic -- an outbreak that killed an estimated 50 to 100 million people, Ridenour noted.
He estimates this time up to one billion people could perish during the pandemic, but not solely from the virus' lethal effects. Instead, Ridenour believes many will not survive because of a disastrous infrastructure meltdown caused by the pandemic.
Ridenour noted that Tamiflu and other flu treatment drugs will likely not be an effective defense against the virus. If people can stay secluded indoors for the first 8-10 days of the outbreak, he recommended, there is a good chance they will survive the first wave.

Bio
Gary Ridenour attended Hiram College and was at Woodstock and the Kent State Shootings. He interviewed at numerous medical schools that refused his application because they didn’t like people that,"rock the boat." Gary attended medical school in Guadalajara, Mexico and was one of the main characters in the movie, "Bad Medicine," written by a classmate. He ran his own clinic for the poor out of a Catholic Church clinic and sometimes sat and read up on a problem with the patient in the room. Doctor Ridenour did his Internship in Regina, Sakatchewan, and then moved to St. Louis for his residency in Internal Medicine.
Later he set up the Critical Care Fellowship Program and was the first fellow. After training Dr. Ridenour ran the emergency room at St. Louis City Hospital, where he saw a murder a day, a rape a day and two gunshots to the chest a day. In 1975 he set up the first free-standing rape treatment center at City Hospital and was, "Citizen of the Year," in 1980. He decided to go West and arrived in Fallon, Nevada in 1981. During the Reagan years, Naval Air Station Fallon grew into the premier fighter weapon school in the world and boasts of being the home to, “Top Gun.” Dr. Ridneour has been heavily engaged in the leukemia cluster in Fallon and has co-authored four papers on the subject. He probably is the only citizen in the U.S., who can say he turned an aircraft carrier around toward home and made sure everyone received antiviral medications on the way. His current interest is in educating everyone on the threat of the, "Avian Flu

I've three new blogs coming once Jon returns from holidays.
New things always excite me. Even blogs, but I'm particularly interested in new money, but just can't see it in my Crystal Ball, you're not getting any sensory vibes about it are you?
Love your descriptions of living off Alaska, it's just those pesky bears you have to worry about who, in the face of scarce pickings elsewhere just might decide they find you very savoury and if their appetite is ravishing, a Raven stew, no cooking required may delght their taste buds if challenging their teeth.
Keep on snoozin' fellah, no wonder you do not sleep in the night.
If God wanted us to be awake at the wrong time of day, he'd insist we be born in the day (oops, sorry about that, some are)

If I understood the report from the other night, the virus has jumped species to a pig(s), which has a similar physical make up comparable to humans. Which means that it could become very pathogenic. It takes hold in the lungs, liver and brains.
In the young, it triggers the immune system and a flood of cytokine goes hyper in what is called a cytokine storm and starts attacking the victims body. They drown in their own body fluids. This is a very evil virus.
If deliberately cultivated, enhanced to jump species and released, I personally think, loss of life could be over 50 -100 million or more.
Maybe someone will actually get this. I hope so katyzzz.

Well there goes any plans of mine to travel to Asia! When I was there c ouple of years agi I noticed how sterile everything was, from people walking around with masks over the noses to sanitizer in a box above the elevator door buttons.
I recall reading about the Spanish flu too - you have elaborated on all this in scary detail. I can handle the cold and a few bears I may just be heading your way.
Tomorrow when I clean the bird droppings from my car I may do so with more care!

In case I never mentioned this, feel free to repost my stuff anytime, if it wakes a singular person up, it's worth it; but do let them know its OK to pass the alarm along.
uh, try and do something about the age 20-40 thing, it'll help; wear a face mask when around large groups of people, but do remove it in banks.

It is a scary thought, especially when you see how migratory birds are wandering off their usual paths - that makes the spread even more unpredictable and with us on the doorstep.... shivers!
I`ll try to remember to remove the mask upon entry to the bank. May find myself talking about other birds.... of the jail kind!
