Beyond strange is the weird, beyond normal is paranormal, beyond paranormal is, ...what? Reality, the fingerprint of God or insanity staring you in the face.

Street Light Interference

July 20th 2008 16:57
I recently came across this article and wanted to share it with you. This happens to me all the time. Not just with streetlights but with other items. TV’s, watches, computers, PDA’s, cell phones… etc.

Have you ever noticed street lights mysteriously turning off as you walk or drive by and thought that you might be the cause? Maybe you are. Welcome to the world of SLIders.

Some people claim to have a psychic ability where an electromagnetic disturbance from their subconscious somehow causes nearby street lights to temporarily turn off. This phenomenon is called Street Light Interference (SLI) and people with this ability are called SLIders. So far, there have been no scientifically valid studies of the phenomenon but there are plenty of anecdotal reports of it occurring. In 1993, Hilary Evans of the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena documented the experiences of 77 SLIders and, since then, many people have posted details of their own experiences on SLI websites.
SLI affects both males and females of all ages and from all walks of life. In most cases the phenomenon is intermittent although it is more likely to occur when the SLIder is in a stressed or emotional state. SLI is usually generated by the subconscious mind and cannot be brought on by consciously trying to turn a street light off. SLIders are often people who have no particular interest in the paranormal and think they are alone in having this ability or are unwilling to tell others because they have been ridiculed in the past. They are often relieved to find that others share their ability.

A SLIder is usually within 20 metres of the street light when SLI occurs, sometimes directly underneath and sometimes further away. Additionally, SLI doesn't happen to all street lights, it seems that some are more susceptible than others. It is unknown why street lights are affected so much. SLIders do not report that they have any great affinity for street lights and it is thought that street lights are must be very susceptible to this sort of psychic interference. Some, but not all, SLIders have also reported having effects on electrical appliances, battery powered watches and household lights.
Of course, as with any unexplained phenomenon, there are many skeptics who refuse to entertain the idea that the phenomenon is real. Alternative explanations have been offered; the street lights are designed to cycle off and on or do so towards the end of their life or that light sensitive sensors on the street lights are triggered by approaching cars. These may explain some coincidental occurrences of street lights turning off but experts do not believe that this is common enough to explain all reports of SLI. Until the SLI phenomenon is scientifically studied it will remain unexplained and in the meantime SLI websites will continue to receive reports from SLIders.

What are your experiences and thoughts?

It happens a lot, especially if I am in a highly emotionally charged state of mind. Where it once freaked me out, now I chuckle about it.

Great post, thanks, but add radios to the list.

WoW, I did have a friend, Susan that always complaint when she walked by the street lights, the lights will suddenly turned off and this really scared her a lot...

Hmm..., I think Susan might be one of the SLIders here, probably...(Will tell her about this story and let her decide it)

I am one of those weirdos who actually has an affect on all electronics. I haven't worn a wristwatch in about 10 years, as I always stop them. My parents actually stopped me from touching the VCR when we were kids, because I would actually zap them and break them.

Also, I cannot use landline phones. I put them out of order every time. What happens is like a static shock, sometimes with a blue spark, and Whammo! The thing quits working.

I have also experienced the street light thing.

I like to think it is because I drag my feet too much when I walk and generate a huge static charge. But, I don't know if that can explain all of it.

Luckily I've never ruined my PC!

It's great not being the only odd duck on the pond isn't it?

Nat2, usually, your connection with the PC is with a mouse and a keyboard, that helps.

Raven, you've changed your logo, or else got a new writer, but is this Raven talking to Raven and if so, how so? you've a different icon, I thought it was 'no can do', ever heard of epilepsy? perhaps this is just some variation on a neurological theme, all of us have electrical and magnetic activity in us, might this just be a case of more of some than the rest of us, or else some abnormality rather than some paranormality?

My mother cannot wear a wrist watch because the battery runs out in a matter of a few days.

I tend to notice street lights going off when I approach them. I've always thought it had something to do with me but as I grew older I realized that it's probably just random and you know street lights tend to cycle on and off throughout the night. Coincidence? Maybe.

Skyrun4 is an expat Alaskan residing somewhere out east who loves the Paranormal as much as I do, so I suggested she write articles here and it's very nice to have her do so, that same invite extends to you too katyzzz.

I want to lean towards the paranormal and say the psychic energy knocks out the lights n munches on watch batteries.

My car is all electric, and I've got to go have my electrical accessories repaired because they don't function anymore.

How's that one ConfusionR . . .? Mom seeming more normal now. Huh, oh ~ hold up, I just realized I have boxes and boxes of batteries for my home use and race through them pretty quickly....

I'm going to try the foil hat trick and see if it helps. I'll keep everyone posted about the results.

On May 25th, 2008, close by where I live was hit with an F5 Tornado. I live in northeastern Iowa. My tv and radio blew. I had my laptop on but it was unpluged. The keyboard got all screwed up and took me about 8 hours of cursing to fix. My cell phone also has glitches but does work. I get a tickled pink during the electrical storms because the hairs on my arms always stand up and the hair on my head gets full of static. Until May 25th I was always outside during the storms. I no longer have that desire.

When ever someone I am close to dies my tv acts strange too. It switches to religious channels. That ever happen to anyone?

whoaaa, Sky ~ you're right, that is very odd, but comforting at the same time; if I passed on, it'd play Howdy Doo-Dee reruns, in black and white and you'd know for sure that it was me changing planes of existence.

Raven, if I pass on I will haunt you with reruns of Land of the Lost, Shazam, and Footloose.

My grandfather can witch for water. My father can't wear a watch. I burn out lightbulbs like crazy when I'm feeling upset or anxious. I've always thought that we just have an extraordinary amount of electricity in our bodies or something.
